Saab 96 - Rust Proofing the Cabin Floor

The cabin floor was very solid but had surface rust in all the usual places. This was treated to stop it getting any worse. The paint used was POR-15.

POR was a 3 step process

  • Degrease
  • Etch - prime
  • Paint
  • Top coat (optional)

First the floor was striped of paint using chemical paint stripper. This showed that there were other areas of the floor which had started to rust under the paint. None of the rust was serious.

Next the floor was de-greased and etch-primed. This photo shows the floor after the etch-primer. Notice how it has eaten into the rust and form a keyed surface for the paint.

Finally the floor was painted with 2 coats of POR-15 paint in grey.

POR-15 is special because it dries anhydrously, which means it absorbs moisture thereby preventing rust. Most paints dry by evaporating solvent which leaves microscopic holes in the surface which can let moisture in.

Finally a coat of Saab red was applied to make the floor look a bit smarter.
