3D Printing a Tank Protector for the
BMW R65

A common fault on R65s is that the movement of the seat can wear the paint on the tank, leading to corrosion and eventually, tank failure.

The previous owner had protected the tank with a bead of epoxy resin, but I wanted to try and make something a bit neater.
The plan was to draw something out that could be 3D printed in TPU, a soft flexible rubber, to act as a cushion between the seat and the tank.

The part was printed with 100% infill and was 1.8mm thick.
With TPU print speed should be set to around 20mm/s with zero retraction.

It was glued to the tank with contact adhesive.
With the seat fitted, the part was not visible.
