Stuart No 1
Box Bed

The lower base part of the steam engine and a simple component to finish, by hand on on the mill.

The top and bottom faces were filed flat (or milled).
Then the 3 mounting holes were drilled using the drill press, these hole positions were already marked in the casting to make location straightforward.
Finally the 4 mounting holes were completed on the top face by clamping the box bed and sole plate (already drilled) together and drilling though both parts, a process known as transfer drilling.
The 4 holes were taped using the drill press but turning the chuck by hand, to ensure the studs would stand perpendicular to the top face.
