Simple Oscillating Steam Engine - Main Axle

The main axle was another very simple component. The length was non-critical but a minimum of 50mm is suggested.

The axle was cut from a length of 6mm silver steel.

First the bar was cut with a hacksaw just over 50mm long. Then each end was faced on the lathe to take the axle to final length.

When facing the axle ends, the work was placed as far back on the chuck for maximum rigidity. The tool was set exactly on centre height to ensure no pip was left on the end.

To de-burr the axle ends a file was used with the chuck spinning, to add a small chamfer on each end.
